Battered Women’s Syndrome

Notes that although domestic abuse is not a new component of our society, it is one which has seemingly become a more prominent component in recent years. Contends that with our increased awareness of this phenomenon we have begun to consider the psychological impacts which battered women sustain, impacts which sometimes drive them to violence and even murder. As a consequence, the concept of the battered woman has now entered the courtroom not solely as a description of a plaintiff but as a defense strategy for a women who has committed a violent crime as a result of the psychological trauma to which she has been subjected. The story is a true one- about a NJ man who murdered his wife on the Garden State Parkway and alleged that the act was committed by strangers in the night who knocked him unconscious while changing a flat tire. The report examines the prosecutor's work in investigating, unfolding the true story, and getting a conviction. Paper argues that sentencing was insufficient.
