Events : Gun Control
[ send
me this paper ]
In 7 pages, the author discusses gun control. The topic of
gun control is not a new one. It has been the focus of the
nation for years, and this focus is increasing. With the
presidential primaries that have occurred as well as the
general election in November, this topic has become more of
a political one with the express views of the candidates
being important to the citizenry. Some citizens are pro-gun
control and others are anti-gun control. In the wake of all
of the campaign information and the pro-gun vs. anti-gun
proponents, however, one must understand that lives are
continuing to be lost because of the lack of gun control in
this nation. This is evidenced when picking up a magazine,
journal, or newspaper today. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

Do
Work Release Programs Help to Reduce Recidivism?
[ send
me this paper ]
A 21 page paper presenting a study of whether work release
programs are effective in preventing subsequent
incarceration for new crimes. Work release programs have
been in use for nearly a century, but they are seen as being
too difficult to administer and some claim they take jobs
from the areas surrounding the prisons using work release.
As the primary difficulty that a newly-released former
inmate faces is that of finding a job, however, the benefits
of real job experience and the existence of an inmate
savings account are attractive. Difficulty in finding
employment is cited as a primary contributor to recidivism,
and it would seem that work release programs should reduce
that pressure. Only a few states track recidivism rates at
all, and most studies report mixed results as does this one.
The study concludes that even though work release does not
eliminate recidivism and the cost of maintaining an inmate
is comparable to that of maintaining him in prison, the
program is beneficial if only for other experiences gained
through it. Bibliography lists 14 sources.

Drug
Free School Zone Laws / A Socio-Legal Analysis
[ send
me this paper ]
7 pages in length. In New Jersey, as well as in a few other
states, laws providing enhanced penalties for drug offenses
occurring near schools have become quite popular. Through
sociological analysis, the writer discusses how these laws
came to pass out of custom, social need, etc; A conclusive
evaluation determines that the law's impact has not been
what was originally intended and that more than anything,
"Drug Free School Zone" laws have only created a
new avenue for aggressive plea-bargaining. Key terms and
concepts are defined. No Bibliography.
